Gujarati Cinema, informally known as Dhollywood or Gollywood, is the Gujarati language film industry. It is one of the major regional and vernacular industries of Indian cinema, having produced more than a thousand films since its inception.
During the silent film era, many industry figures were Gujaratis. The industry associated with the language dates back to 1932, when the first Gujarati talkie, Narsingh Mehta, was introduced. Only twelve Gujarati films were produced until India's independence in 1947. Film production in the 1940s focused on saint, sati or dacoit stories as well as mythology and folklore. This trend continued in the 1950s into the 1960s, with the addition of films to literary works. In the 1970s, the Gujarat government announced tax exemptions and subsidies, which resulted in an increase in the number of films, but a decline in quality.
After booming in the 1960s and 1980s, the industry experienced a 2000 decline when the number of new films dropped below twenty. Gujarat state government again announced tax exemption in 2005 which lasted till 2017. The industry took off in the 2010s, first due to rural demand and later due to the influx of new technology and urban subjects in films. has been revived. The state government announced a policy of incentives in 2016.
