IMD Forecast For Cyclonic Storm Over Bay of Bengal: Another destructive entry is hitting India, Cyclone Mocha is bringing havoc from the Bay of Bengal. On the one hand, the Odisha government has asked the nearby district collectors and 11 divisions to remain on high alert in view of a possible cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal. Regarding this storm, the Director General (DG) of the Meteorological Department (IMD) Mrityunjay Mohapatra has given a big notification on Wednesday (May 3) and said that the numerical model is indicating that the May 9 cyclone will be Mocha.

What did DG IMD say on the storm?

IMDG Mohapatra K has expressed the possibility of developing a cyclonic storm over South East Bay of Bengal around May 6. This will be affected around May 7 under varying pressure in most areas. The cyclone may develop into a depression over South East Bay of Bengal on May 8. After this, the cyclonic storm is likely to intensify on May 9, moving almost northwards over the central Bay of Bengal.

The speed and intensity of this cyclone can be determined only after the formation of a low pressure area on May 7. Brief information about this may be given after this. DG Mohapatra said that it is very difficult for him to predict the path of a heat cyclone. He further said that, for this, the Meteorological Department is continuously monitoring the system.

What is the weather forecast for Odisha?

IMD DG Mohapatra said, “So far there is no forecast of landfall i.e. the cyclone passing over the land along the coast of India. He further said that no alert has been announced for the Odisha coast. There is no forecast about possible effects of the system (cyclone system) on Odisha.

Regarding the expected weather forecast for the impact of the cyclonic disturbance over the Bay of Bengal, winds of 40-50 kmph are likely to blow over the south-east and surrounding areas of the Bay of Bengal on the 7th. Gusty speed in and around south-east Bay of Bengal is likely to increase gradually to 50-60 kmph to 70 kmph.

A warning to fishermen -

The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen, small vessels, small boats and trawlers not to venture into the south-east and surrounding areas of the Bay of Bengal from May 7. Seafarers have been warned to return to safe places before May 7. IMD DG Mohapatra has told people that no one should be afraid of a possible storm, but be prepared for any situation. He further said – “IMD will give daily updates on every development. Cyclones are most frequent in May and Odisha has faced nature's fury before.
